In Memoriam of Mike Baker

Mike Baker, our founder and president for 22 years, passed away in December of 2017, leaving behind an enduring legacy that we are honored to uphold and build upon. A 36-year veteran of the banking software industry, Mike was a true visionary and pragmatic innovator, but even more importantly, a down-to-earth, genuine guy with whom people enjoyed doing business.

Decades ago, Mike recognized that the world was changing, and banking needed to keep pace. He saw the promise of customer relationship management (CRM) and managing the customer experience well before the terms became fashionable. Rather than pontificate, which wasn’t his style, Mike built a company and solutions set to help banks and credit unions “treat their customers and members like real people” and provide highly personalized service.

Mike’s contributions to the industry are many, from earlier days, leading sales and marketing for a banking technology provider that earned its place on the Inc. 500, to KIVA Group, but even more noteworthy are the countless relationships he developed along the way. Folks who did business with Mike around the world, and those of us who were fortunate enough to work with him every day, often became personal friends, and were warmly welcomed by him as members of the “KIVA family.”

Mike was esteemed and trusted by employers, employees, colleagues, partners, clients and advisors alike. His spirit of entrepreneurialism, determination, compassion and integrity were evident from the first moment one met him, as were his good humor and infectious grin. Mike’s spirit will be ever-present at KIVA, as will the impression he has made – personally and professionally – on so many of us.
